Dr. John NilesPrior to becoming a minister in the United Church, John Niles was working in the field of social work. His work took him from treatment homes for the emotionally disturb child to residential homes for violent and delinquent youth. Later, he worked in a minimum-security halfway house for adults. Finally, completing his career in this area in a maximum-security treatment prison for the criminally insane.

John Niles holds numerous degrees in social work, sociology, theology, and psychology. His final degree was a doctorate. He and his wife Liane have five children and have cared for nearly 1000 others. They are the primary emergency home for all of Metro Toronto. They receive children from birth to 5 years of age. Many of these children are born addicted to crack and heoin, or suffering from fetal alcohol effects, and or arrive on their doorstep with broken bones due to abuse.

John and Liane have together been nominated for the Order of Ontario, the Meritorious Service Metal, and the Order of Canada. They have received in 2001 the "Community Service Humanitarian of the Year Award" from the Empire Club of Canada. Most recently, they received from the Children's Aid Society the "Heart and Spirit Humanitarian of the Year Award" for 2004.

They have also appeared on CBC Radio, City TV and TVO. Various articles have been written about their work in the Toronto Star, Toronto Sunand in the Globe and Mail, as well as a feature article in the United Church Observer Magazine.
